De Dr. Albert Plesman Memorial Lecture is op initiatief van de International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 1954 ontstaan ter nagedachtenis aan Dr. Albert Plesman, eerste voorzitter van KLM en een van de oprichters van IATA. De lezing over ontwikkelingen op het gebied van de luchtvaart heeft een wetenschappelijk karakter en wordt gehouden bij de TU Delft, waar Dr. Albert Plesman een ere-doctoraat is verleend in 1947.

Sinds eind mei woont en werkt de Belgische astronaut Frank De Winne aan boord van het internationale ruimtestation ISS. Op dinsdag 29 september praat hij via een rechtstreekse videoverbinding met studenten van de TU Delft, verzameld op de faculteit Luchtvaart- en Ruimtevaartechniek. Bijzonder is dat De Winne begin oktober commandant wordt van het ruimtestation, als eerste niet-Rus of -Amerikaan. De gespreksleiding ligt bij collega-astronaut André Kuipers. Het videogesprek van de studenten met de Belgische astronaut Frank De Winne is een bijzonder moment voor de Delftse faculteit Luchtvaart- en Ruimtevaarttechniek. De faculteit onderhoudt een warme band met België: 13 procent van de bachelor-studenten van L&R is Vlaams, een in Nederland unieke situatie.

Proefcollege Ruimtevaartsystemen - Space Systems Engineering Space systems Engineering covers a broad field, ranging from satellite engineering, space systems engineering, orbital mechanics, instrumentation, launchers and propulsion to mission analysis, remote sensing, planetary exploration and scientific interpretation of satellite observation data. Astronautics is quite different from aeronautics because each space mission is uniquely designed to perform a specific task related to its operational or scientific objectives. You can observe three satellite models in de hall of the faculty of Aerospace Engineering; The Herschel, The Goce and the Planck. There will be scale models of our student projects Delfi-C3 and Delfi-NEXT in the restaurant. The student team can answer questions and tell you more about the design. Proefcollege Vliegtuig ontwerpen - Aircraft Design Aircraft Design richt zich op het ontwerpen van complexe systemen, in het bijzonder luchtvaartuigen en hefschroefvliegtuigen in al hun aspecten. Het doel is om studenten op te leiden tot multidisciplinaire ingenieurs die zich in het bedrijfsleven en onderzoeksinstituten bezighouden met multidisciplinair ontwerp, analyse en optimalisatie. Om dit te bereiken worden complete voertuigen (vliegtuig-, hefschroef- en voortstuwingsystemen) gebruikt als voornaamste studieonderwerp. Deze onderwerpen worden gezien als complexe systemen die vaak deel uitmaken van een nog gecompliceerder transportsysteem. Daarom kan er alleen met succes worden ontworpen en geoptimaliseerd wanneer de mogelijkheden en vorderingen van de afzonderlijke disciplines (te weten aerodynamica, constructies, voortstuwing, stabiliteit en controle, vluchtuitvoering, etc.) worden verzameld, afgewogen en geïntegreerd.

Rethinking Engineering Education
Between 2000 and 2005 MIT pioneered and adopted a new model of engineering education, in brief CDIO, stressing engineering fundamentals within the context of the actual process engineers use. Its objective is to match engineering graduates to the needs of the professional market, which are: a high level of disciplinary knowledge in combination with a sound level of academic and engineering skills. The CDIO Initiative has many followers, especially in the aerospace sector (also industries like Boeing, GE Aviation (formerly GE Aircraft Engines), Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, Orbital, Pratt & Whitney Canada). Although we did not construct it intentionally as such, our new 2009 Bachelor Aerospace Engineering proves to be highly compatible with this model. According to CDIO the TU Delft BSc Aerospace Engineering is the best implementation of the CDIO template worldwide at a university. In 2011 our Faculty has joined the CDIO Initiative and finds the educational model and the collaboration with the worldwide CDIO members highly valuable and inspiring. The membership may also be valuable for promotion and support our next accreditation. In the presentation Dave will address the CDIO Initiative, the framework of a CDIO-type curriculum and the compatibility of our bachelor.

Solar System Exploration
In 2006 I was asked to help develop a new track, “Planetary Exploration” in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, TU Delft. Since the development of new instrumentation, satellites and small spacecraft is key to further advance the field of Planetary Sciences, it seems quite natural to combine basic research of our Solar System with technological innovations. Hence my interest to help develop this at the TU Delft. The overall goal in exploring our Solar System is to understand how our Solar System formed, how life on Earth started and evolved, and if there are other planetary systems like ours, which may harbor life. In this inaugural talk I will start giving some background about myself, and show some aspects of my own research, mostly focused on Jupiter (Jupiter’s atmosphere, impacts, and magnetic field). I will discuss in a broad sense the connection between my research and past and current missions. Towards the end of the talk I will discuss some science highlights from more recent and future missions, which leads up to our “vision” for the future in the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering in Delft.

The heat is on - Volcanic activity in Iceland
Iceland lies on the rift between the Eurasian and North American plates, which are moving apart from each other by about 2 cm every year. It also lies above a mantle “hot spot”. These two facts conspire to make it a highly volcanic land. Eruptions, which occur every few years with the latest occurring right now, can be hazardous both to people living in the area and to air traffic. Geomatic studies play a key roll in monitoring the active volcanoes. Prior to the current eruption, movement of magma to shallower depths caused deformation of the surface, which was imaged using radar remote sensing and GPS. In addition to the volcanic activity these and other surveying techniques are also used to measure motion due to rifting, earthquakes, landslides and changes in the ice/snow load, the last of which causes the Iceland to bounce up and down on a yearly cycle.
